Reflection Question #1: Why do societies adopt dictatorships and single-party states?
Many times societies adopt dictatorships and single-party states during a crisis. That is due to these two forms of government adapting a military government which is needed in times of crisis to restore order and discipline. Other times societies choose to adopt dictatorships or single-party states simply because through active and straightforward decision making they can induce development. In a government where one person has the power to make all decisions, it is much faster and easier to reach policies and implement laws that are able to solve problems. As opposed to democracy’s where most policies and implementation of laws are much slower to reach. Thus, a development inducing government has greater potential in modernizing a society rather than a democracy. A good example of that is the 1936 spanish elections where the republican coalition was formed, and francisco franco unifying all rightist factions. The republican coalition was formed from more than ten parties which infers that all the parties reaching an agreement is nearly impossible as opposed to francisco franco, a dictator, being able to swiftly unify rightist factions and start the “Spanish Miracles”.

Reflection Question #2: What are some of the key strengths and weaknesses of dictatorship and single-party states?
A strong government is established by a dictatorship and single party states. As there is no opposition everything is directed to the achievement of the state, which can easily be achieved. A dictatorship and single party state provides an organized and prompt administration. Since the leader of a ruling party has absolute power, they can take quick actions. There are most of the time, very harsh and strict punishments for even the smallest of crimes in a dictatorship. The result of this is of a much lower crime rate, than other countries who do not operate underneath a dictatorship or single party state. There are also weaknesses for both dictatorship and single party state, the revolts and collapse of these societies are very common and are most likely to happen, because people start to get tired of the harsh rules of a dictator very quickly. Since stalin was a dictator, he modernized and industrialised the soviet union, he extended the boundaries and area of control of the Soviet Union, and he made the Soviet Union into 1 of only 2 world superpowers.

Reflection Question #1: Why do societies adopt dictatorships and single-party states?
Single party states are considered a crisis state. These single party states arise during periods of conflicts, division, or confusion within a society. Such as, during outcomes of war, economic collapse, or social divisions. From these extreme conditions comes a sense of hopelessness or despair in the populations. In times like these people would often turn to extreme measure to solve their simple problems. For example, the rise of fascism in Germany, which arose from from an economic collapse after the Great Depression. Societies would adopt dictatorships because they feel the need to be protected by a strong figure that they could also restore their hope in. For example, Stalin was popular amongst the young because he provided a fatherly figure in their lives. They needed a ruler that was strong but caring. In conclusion, in times of crisis, the society is desperate for a new leader and government system they adopt dictatorships and single-party states.

Reflection Question #2: What are some of the key strengths and weaknesses of dictatorship and single-party states?
Throughout this project I have discovered many strengths and weaknesses that come with a dictatorship and single party state. From my knowledge of dictatorships and single party states, I can immediately say that one strength is the decision making process. By being a "one man" or "one party" the decision making is much faster and more efficient, preventing political debates and issues. Another related strength or advantage would be the ability to manuover quickly between policies. The main weaknesses that come with a dictatorsip and sinlge party state would be teh lack of opinions and checks with decision making. Since it is made by one ruling person or team, the desicion might not be good for the country and lead to bad cases and eventually disorder and inefficiency. It is also very common for a single party state or dictatorship to eventually use their power in advantage for their own good, leading to disagreement and downfall. Overall, I have learnt and taken in the idea of all the strengths and weaknesses that come with a dictatorship and single party state, making the assumption that the disadvantages come from the advantages. For example, the abuse of power- the advantage being the power and the ditator or single party abusing it and leading to disorder.
